Interesting Whale Facts
They were given the name Right Whales, since they were considered to be the ‘right’ whales to hunt. Apart from being rich in blubber, they were also easy to catch (since they are relatively slow swimmers), and they floated after being killed.
Even though Right Whales often seem slow and lumbering, they can be surprisingly quick and active. They often breach, slap their flippers and flukes on the surface, and often raise their flukes on a dive.
Hermanus Whale Route Diary
Visited the Whale Route yesterday (had a lovely guest from the Netherlands), and though I’ve experienced some rather brilliant performances by our aquatic friends, yesterday definitely ranks as one of the best. Breaching, bobbing and bolstering into the air, the whales were certainly out to impress. The whales, playing and frolicking a mere 8-12 meters from where we stood, were captivating their audiences with their graceful poise and acrobatic manoeuvres – a photographers dream! Suffice to say, it was an all round perfect day – sunny, cloudless, blue skies and a light sea breeze, with the wind only picking up later in the day. Undoubtedly a day to remember! - Marlyn
